SQL Server 2008 RTM has not been released yet. It probably will be released
in the 3. quarter of this year. So you'll need to wait for it if you are
determined to install SQL Server 2008.
SQL Mail is deprecated in SQL Server 2005. There is "Database Mail" in SQL
Server 2005 and 2008. You can take advantage of it. You do not need a MAPI
if you use Database Mail. You create a Profile and Account for the email and
use it.
Here's a link where you can get more info about Database Mail:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175887.aspx
I do not think you'll experience problems with Office' s 32bit version under
x64 system. I do not know about the exceptions...
P.S.
There are CTP versions of SQL Server 2008 which are for evaluation and test
porpuses. A CTP version is not recommended using for Production
environments. If you are interested in CTPs of SQL Server, you can google
for it.

MSDE on Windows 2003 R2 box, new DL385G6 - Install Fails during SQL Services SQL Server I have been finding that I am having trouble with the Crystal Reports Server XI installation failing when it is dealing with SQL. So, as a thought and in case there was something wrong with my SQL portion of the isntall. I thought ok, I will try installing the actual MSDE application direct from Microsoft. So, I downloaded the MSDE for SQL 2000 (which is msde2000a.exe), set my switches and off to the races. It quit seconds left to the installation and bombed with the same errors as the Crystal Reports Server install. The error is the same whether I try to install MSDE by itself or
