Hi,

We have four different software products that use now MS SQL Server 2000
databases. We are using SQL Server 2000 Standard 1 cpu license. I am going to
purchase a new server and transfer these software to the new server and
replace SQL Server 2000 with version 2005 or 2008.

Two software is used by less than 10 users. The rest two software are used
by less than two hundred users each. Any software is not using SQL analyzing
or reporting services. Maximum user database size is about 500 megabyte.

I think that the SQL Server 2005 or 2008 Workgroup edition 1 processor
license will be suitable for our needs? If I buy a SQL Server 2008 1 cpu
license, am I allowed to downgrade to SQL Server 2005 Workgroup edition?

Hello Nameless.

Why would you even consider 2005? It happens to be the year 2009 and SQL
Server 2008 is already at SP1 so why cut out key functionality and
improvements? If anything, the 10 user application could work on MS SQL
Express (if this is a money saving exercise) but I doubt you can still
buy 2005 from reputable distributors anyway. Just go SQL Server 2008 and
be done with it.

Hi,

What's the point of putting money on a new version of SQL-Server instead of
putting money on a more powerful machine (more cores per CPU, more memory,
better and bigger I/O)?

Is it because you want to go 64 bit?

Well, 2000 is past end of life for support, could be one driving reason.

The difference in cost between 2005 and 2008 is zero, last I checked, so why
one would opt for 2005, I am not sure, unless they are using an ISV
application that will absolutely not support 2008.
